322 Movies

322. That's the number of movies I watched in 2014. That’s well below my all-time record of 588 in 2004, and 21 below off last year’s total of 343.

Of the 322 movies I saw, I watched 157 of them for the first time. Here are my rules. As far as the count goes, only feature films count, no matter whether I saw them in a theater, DVD, VHS, Netflix, or on TV. This also includes complete features on YouTube or as AVI files.

• TV shows don't count, unless they were presented in a format resembling a feature film (for instance, the pilot episodes of MAN FROM ATLANTIS, which aired as full-length made-for-TV movies)
• Made-for-TV movies count
• Documentaries count
• I didn't count short subjects or feature-length making-of documentaries included as DVD extras
• Movie serials and TV miniseries count as one long feature
• Multiple viewings each count as a separate movie

These are my rules. Your mileage may vary.

How many movies did you watch this year?

I really like those 1990's Rockford Files TV movies. I wish they had released all of them on DVD, but alas...

Looks like you had a good movie year.

I watched 196 new films.

My top five for 2014: TUSK, Locke, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Unknown Known, and Interstellar. Bonus pick: The Lego Movie.

I saw many great films. The best: ROOM 237.
Also great: Four Rooms, Drive ('11), Phantom of the Paradise, Man of Tai Chi, Blood & Bone, Jodorowsky's Dune, Seven Psychopaths, Tim's Vermeer, F For Fake, Guardians of the Galaxy, Only Lovers Left Alive, and JOHN WICK! I cannot recommend it enough!

Worst: JOBS! Oh, my God! I laughed so hard I had to pause the DVD. ("He's a changed man." Cut to: Jobs frantically combing his hair and tucking in his shirt, literally changing! They do this TWICE!)
Also terrible: Olympus Has Fallen, Argento's Dracula, The Babysitter, 7 Below, Fun-Size, Cabin Fever Patient Zero, Birdemic 2: The Resurrection, Laserhawk, Edison Force, and Maniac Cop.

It's been a good year. I became the town's film critic, so I get to go to the theater every month. And at home I pursued movies I was only interested in and truly excited about. It's made me that much hungrier for great art.

I loved your articles this year. I especially liked the Star Trek TMP commentary. Happy New Year!
